The Summer Remains

I wasn't on the hunt for a sad book when I went for this one. But this one was rough. Really rough. I had to stop halfway though because I was just so so sad. This is one of the books that just tears you up inside, and then your like "here everyone read this."

"You know, we all have scars, Summer. If yours are only on the outside, you should consider yourself lucky."

This story is about Summer, she is facing a life threatening surgery at the end of the Summer. The odds are not good, but she is at a point in her life where she is trying to not be a burden to anyone in her life anymore. She tells her doctor that she has two wishes, she wants to spend the summer at the beach, and she wants to fall in love. Everyone kind of laughs and brushes her off, but she leaves the office determined. She downloads a dating app and after a few pretty cruel guys she matches up with Cooper. He ends up being a God send to her. He tries to help her see how beautiful she is to him, but that is hard for Summer. She is so self conscious, self conscious of her scar from a  previous surgery on her face, and self conscious of her feeding tube in her stomach. They spend a beautiful summer together and fall in love.

"We don't get to choose how much time we get in this life, but we do get to choose how we spend it."

I loved Summer. Sure, she was a little self deprecating at time, but she also had a good sense of humor given her circumstances. She accepted what was happening to her with her health, but she also tried to have a positive outlook on life around her. She was a good person, she had a big heart, and she just desperately wanted to fall in love.

"We were soul mates, this boy on the cusp of forever, this girl on the edge of oblivion."

Cooper was like a breath of fresh air for Summer. Before she found him she had her mom, her brother, and her best friend Autumn. He was described as a beautiful boy, and Summer just couldn't believe he wanted anything to do with her. He loved Summer fiercely. He thought she was beautiful, and he loved her kind soul. He was a writer, and the summer he spent with Summer brought out the writing that he had previously locked away. She helped him feel alive again.

There were only a few side characters in the story, and they didn't really make a huge impact on me. I noticed the author wrote a second book about a couple of the other characters, but I probably wont read it. This story, to me, was just about Summer and Cooper. It was about them finding themselves, finding each other, and falling in love. They had a beautiful love story, and I don't think it needed much more than that.

Overall I'm giving this book 4 STARS. I really enjoyed it. It brought out a lot of emotions in me and it had a beautiful love story,.I honestly don't know why it wasn't a 5 star read for me, but it just didn't WOW me. Don't let that take away from this story, it is definitely worth the read.
