The Wives
Waiting..waiting...that's what women do. We wait for him to get home, we wait for him to pay attention to us, wait to be treated fairly- for our worth to be seen and acknowledged. Life is just a waiting game for women.
Imagine that your husband has two other wives. You've never met the other wives. None of you know each other, and because of this unconventional arrangement, you can see your husband only one day a week. But you love him so much you don't care. Or at least that's what you've told yourself.
But one day, while you're doing laundry, you find a scrap of paper in his pocket- an appointment reminder for a woman named Hannah, and you just know it's another of the wives.
You thought you were fine with your arrangement, but you can't help yourself: you track her down, and, under false pretenses, you strike up a friendship. Hannah has no idea who you really are. Then Hannah starts showing up to your coffee dates with telltale bruises, and you realize she's being abused by her husband. Who, of course, is also your husband. But you've never known him to be violent, ever.
Who exactly is your husband, and how far would you be willing to go to find out?
And who is his mysterious third wife?
I never know what to expect with a Tarryn Fisher book. She always blows my mind. She always makes me question my sanity. I felt like I was losing my mind as I was reading this book.
I couldn't tell if Thursday was a villain or a victim in this book. Honestly, I couldn't tell if there were any trustworthy characters in this book. The book starts with Thursday telling you she's married to a man who has 2 other wives. She is an obedient wife. She only gets her husband on Thursday's and she makes sure she tends to his every need for the short time that he is with her. I immediately was thinking what is wrong with this chick? She talked about how she loved him so much, and only did all of this, and agreed to all of this because she wanted to make sure he knew how much she loved him.
I didn't like Seth at all. I couldn't figure out if he was shady, or if he really just wanted to live a life of polygamy, because he was used to that having grown up with it. Something about him seemed off to me, and I couldn't put my finger on it. Then again, everyone in the whole book seemed a little off their rocker, so who am I to really judge the guy?
When Thursday found a note in Seth's pocket with the name and address of one of the other wives I was curious as to what she was going to do with that information. And when she took matters into her own hands and went to visit Hannah, but then didn't tell her she was one of Seth's wives, I thought maybe she was a bit unstable.
Things quickly start to get a little out of control after Thursday meets Hannah, and she can't stop digging into Seth's life, even though when they started their arrangement she promised none of that mattered to her, and that she wanted it all.
I can't go into anymore detail about the events that transpire after all this, because I don't want to give anything away. This book is nuts. I didn't expect ANY of the things that went down to happen, I didn't like ANY of the characters, and I'm still thinking about this one long after I finished. If you like suspense, and a good psychological thriller this is the book for you. I love reading Tarryn books because she is so different than the romance novels I usually read, but I love it.
Overall, I'm giving this one 5 STARS. Tarryn is a queen at writing a book that makes you question everything. She always blows my mind, and things are NEVER what they seem. Trust me when I say this is a book you want to pick up and read. When you do, shoot me a message, I need someone to talk to after this.
