The Consequence of Falling

Several of the authors I follow on social media have been raving about this book. I used to be hesitant to start one that a lot of people have been talking about, because I would think "what is wrong with me, if I don't like it as much as everyone else did?" I've read so many books now that I've learned not to care. I'm never embarrassed about a book I love anymore. This one was as good as they say though, and I'm always happy to find a good read!

"I was tired of smiling. I was done pretending. It was my turn to live the life I wanted to live."

I have read books by Claire before, and I have yet to be disappointed. She has a way of weaving a story and keeping you wrapped up in what is going on, so much so that you don't want to stop because your afraid of what you might miss. This was a great love story. I love a story where the characters are considered enemies at first, but they find out that they have loved each other for all this time. A romance that takes time is my favorite kind, because it feels so realistic to me.

Presley and Nathaniel have known each other since they were teenagers. Presley was a spoiled brat, mad at the world because her parents were getting divorced, and Nathaniel was a kid from the wrong side of the tracks that grew up with nothing, but was taken under Presley's dads wing. Presley's resentment of him came from the fact that she felt like her dad spent more time with him than her, and she was already feeling abandoned because of the divorce. Their paths cross many times over the years, and it ends in them fighting every time. Right after college Presley is set to marry her college boyfriend, Adam, when Nathaniel comes in on her wedding day to tell her he is not good enough for her and then kisses her and leaves. She carries on with the wedding anyway, despite her conflicted feelings, and eventually you learn they are heading towards divorce. Presley ends up back at her father's company working side by side with Nathaniel.

"One thing I did learn throughout my life was that the weight of unspoken words always felt heavier than the burden of the consequences they carried."

Right from the first chapter I was not a fan of Presley. The thought actually crossed my mind that I was not going to be able to get into the book, because I did not like her at all. She was a spoiled brat. It seemed like she had a chip on her shoulder and she was rude to everyone. She talked to people like they were beneath her, and I just couldn't like her. It didn't take me long to understand why she acted the way she did. I did end up liking her character a lot by the end of the story. She was misunderstood because she felt like she had to live up to everyone's expectations. She never felt good enough for her father, and throughout her life she always felt like she was being upstaged by men. It took her a while to figure out that they weren't all looking down on her, some of them were just looking out for her.

"I'm telling you the truth, dammit. I've wanted you since I was eighteen years old and had absolutely no business wanting a girl like you."

Nathaniel was definitely a great book boyfriend. I love it when these authors write in these great book boyfriends, because it definitely makes reading the story a lot easier. Nathaniel was a no nonsense kind of guy. He told people exactly what he thought when he was thinking it. He didn't sugar coat things, and he worked hard to get where he was. He had been holding a candle for Presley since they were teenagers, but sometimes his interest in her came out a little hostile, which caused the bickering between the two of them so often. When she finally gave in and let herself go with him, he was amazing.

"What's the key to my place when you have the key to my heart?"
"So cheesy," I whispered, leaning in to kiss him chastely.
"Yet so effective."

This to me, felt like a good old fashioned love story. They had known each other forever, they felt like they couldn't stand each other, but in all reality they were in love. I will never sugarcoat things here so I will say this one did get pretty steamy. This was one of the few times I didn't mind that it was packed pretty full of steamy scenes, because they worked with the story. It wasn't an overkill of sex, but she definitely didn't gloss over anything.

"The thing about falling was that it didn't happen the way everyone imagined it. Sometimes it happened slowly, over time, and other times you found yourself waiting for the other person to catch up."

Overall, I'm giving this one 5 STARS. I was impressed with this one. I was impressed with the writing, I really enjoyed the story. I shed a few tears, and I laughed, it was very enjoyable. I would definitely recommend picking this one up! And bonus points because there was a snippet of a new Tarryn Fisher book at the end, if you haven't checked her out please do so! She is an amazing author!

"And that was how, at midnight, with fireworks going off outside, we ended up with our arms wrapped around each other, kissing like tomorrow may never come, because you could never be too sure, and I was done wasting time. But, that was the consequence of falling in love. The best consequence."
