The Guy On The Right

This was my first read by Kate Stewart and it was fantastic. I am once again in the romantic comedy rabbit hole and this one was so good. I literally laughed out loud so many times, and even swooned a few times. This one is for sure worth picking up!

"Strike one- my mother named me Theodore after her favorite chipmunk. Not cool, Mom. I've spent most of my life answering to Teddy, because I couldn't make Theo work. Except for here. College. The place where all bets are off, and I've managed to redeem myself. There's only one problem, my new roommate, Troy, is football royalty and looks like he stepped off the set of an Abercrombie shoot. Doesn't matter, I cook a mean breakfast for his panty parade, and we get along well. And anyway, this year I got the girl. And she's perfect. That's right. Theodore Houseman, former band geek, now marching band rock star has finally landed the girl of his dreams. Everything is perfect. That is, until Troy takes a good look at her. I'm not going down without a fight. As a matter of fact, I'm not going down at all. As glorious has these days may be for my all-star roommate, Laney is my end game. I may not know much about play strategy, but I've been the good guy my whole life. I've been listening and I know exactly what women want. Framed in a picture standing next to me, Troy may seem like Mr. Perfect, but he's underestimating the guy on the right. Spoiler alert: In this story, the underdog is going to win."

"Damnit, I really have to go, but I hope we run into each other again sometime. Preferably when we're livin' our best lives."

"Right?" She snorts. "More like living our best lie." "Exactly. Maybe if we ever hang again, we'll do it while living our realest life." "I love that."

First of all, this cover is amazing. I loved it. It fits the book SO well. I loved the friendship and relationship between Lainey and Theo so much. I loved that they started off as friends, and then to see through their eyes when each figured out the other was so much more to them was amazing.

She's a second look kind of girl. The first look at her is for simple appreciation for the stunner she is. The second look is a realization of what an idiot you were for not looking the first time around.

Lainey was amazing. She was nothing but her authentic self, and she didn't care what anyone thought about that. She wanted more for her life, but was also content with the life she had. She truly was a person just trying to live her "realest life." She was hilarious, and I enjoyed reading her point of views with her country twang. It's like I could hear her speaking to me. She tried to guard her heart a bit, but it didn't take long for her to warm up to Theo. She really was a great character. She was the type of book character that you wish was your best friend. She was just such a genuine and solid person. "We are Snoop Dogg at the Chronic Olympics high. We have an Uber coming in five minutes. I need you to find your feet."

"She lifts to her toes and presses a kiss to my cheek. "You keep doing that," I say, my voice coated in whiskey and arousal. "You keep letting me."

Theo was THE BEST. Seriously hands down has to be one of my favorite book boyfriends. I cannot even explain to you how freaking amazing he was, you need to read the book and see for yourself. I liked this whole "underdog lovestory" theme that the book had going. Theo was like this hot band geek, but he definitely had an air of confidence about him. I also like that while he appeared to be pretty secure in himself, you still got to see a side to this guy that you don't get to see a lot in the book boyfriend, he was vulnerable. He had been burned pretty bad, and he was still coping with that. It was nice to finally see the guy struggling with something emotional, more so than the girl in the book. It really made it interesting and I think it made me connect with him more than I usually get the chance to with the male characters of the book. He was SUCH  good guy. Like a genuine good guy, that came from a great and hilarious family, and I just loved everything about him.

"And that's when the thud happens. There's no way I can fall any further. I love her."

This was suuuuch a slow burn. But it didn't feel that way. Sometimes in a book the burn is so slow and agonizing that it hurts to keep reading. This book was so fresh and funny that I didn't even mind that the hookup hadn't happened. I was having so much fun reading about their friendship, and their antics, that when they finally kissed it was just the cherry on top.

The inevitable angst that usually accompanies a story was not bad in this story. Sure, it hurt, because you knew these two felt so much for each other, it sucked to see them going through pain, but I think it made the end that much sweeter. Some things needed worked out, and this was a way to do that, and allow for that big grand gesture. And boy was it grand!

Overall, I'm giving this one 5 STARS. It really was just that good. It was hilarious. I was laughing out loud and I was swooning. I just really loved Theo so much. He made the story for me. Lainey was a great character, and I loved her too, but there was just something about Theo. Kate really knocked it out of the park here. I can't wait to see what else is to come.
